Service Area vs. Storefront: Which Should You Choose?

Published on Aug 20, 2026

One of the most common reasons businesses get suspended from Google Maps is misunderstanding the difference between a Storefront and a Service Area Business (SAB).

Storefront Businesses

A storefront business is one where customers travel to you.
- Examples: Restaurants, retail stores, dental clinics.
- Requirement: You must have clear, permanent signage outside your building.
- Rule: Your address will be publicly visible on Google Maps.

Service Area Businesses (SAB)

An SAB is a business that travels to the customer to provide a service.
- Examples: Plumbers, landscapers, mobile detailers, locksmiths.
- Requirement: You must clear your address from your profile. You cannot display an address if customers cannot visit you there.
- Rule: You will define your service area using zip codes or city names. Your business will still rank in those areas without showing a pin on a specific street.

Hybrid Businesses

If you have a physical location where customers can visit you, BUT you also travel to customers, you are a hybrid business.
- Examples: A pizza shop with dine-in and delivery, or an auto repair shop with roadside assistance.
- Rule: You can show your physical address AND set a service area.
